Between 1921 and 1938 Nino Rota wrote twenty-one lyric poems for voice and piano. Just five of these were published by Ricordi in Milan during the years immediately following their composition. These lyric compositions, not reprinted in recent times, were among the first pieces that revealed the great gifts of child prodigy Nino Rota to the musical world in the early twentieth century.
This edition based on an understanding of the style of vocal chamber compositions by the Milanese maestro has thus been long awaited. This booklet brings together five titles, three of them presented in various keys as found in the original manuscript scores kept in the Fondo Nino Rota at the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice. The existence of original manuscript scores in various keys for several songs by the maestro may well indicate that these were meant for members of his family: many of the songs were dedicated to his cousin the soprano Maria Rota, who preferred a vocal tessitura that was not too high.
The present volume brings together three songs written between 1922 and 1924 setting texts written by the Indian poet Rabidranath Tagore, winner of the Nobel prize for literature in 1913, and translated very successfully into Italian at the end of 1914 by the editor Carabba di Lanciano: Quando tu sollevi la lampada al cielo, Ascolta o cuore, lo cesserò il mio canto. Then there is a setting of a sonnet by Petrarch O passi sparsi, o pensier vaghi e pronti (Sonnet CLXI): written almost ten years after the group of eleven songs from his youth, it was composed at the request of his cousin Maria Rota for the Petrarch week organized by the Accademia Petrarca di Arezzo in 1933. Last comes La passione, to the words of a popular Tuscan poem which takes up the theme of the death of Christ on the Cross, seen through his mother's eyes — this was indeed Nino Rota's last composition in the art song genre. The composition of La passione took place in September 1938 - significantly, a year after the author had left Milan to take on a teaching post at the Liceo Musicale di Taranto: leaving his home town and thus losing close family ties led Nino Rota away from a musical genre he had favoured particularly in his youth and early adulthood.
