From the Foreword of the sheet music for Tre liriche infantili

The Liriche infantili (Three Children’s Songs), dedicated by Nino Rota to his cousin Maria Rota, were composed in 1935 and performed for the first time on 11 April of the same year at the Società it Convegno in Milan. In a previously compiled sketch of the song collection, the movement Il pastorello was foreseen instead of É inutile which was composed around the same time. All texts were written by Lina Schwarz (1876-1947), poet and author of rhymes, songs, books and poems for children, who dedicated her life to social projects for children in need. The same year, Rota composed Lo specchio delle civette, a further song for children, a setting of a text by Aldo Palazzeschi. Thanks to the remarkable number of copies self-printed by Rota, the Liriche infantili initially enjoyed great popularity, despite remaining officially unpublished. The three song titles of the collection correspond to three different images of childhood: the dreamy young fisherman, lost in the tranquillity of the sky and the sea, who is mocked by the fish; the child who is irritated by the carelessness of the sparrows pecking at the breadcrumbs he has spread out for them, and the child returning from visiting an aunt in the country and telling its mother about the day. The common characteristic of these small songs is a clever blend of irony and gentleness. The manuscript bears the dedication: "To Maria with affectionate wishes. Nino / Milan 14 V 1935". Liriche/Lyrics

Il pescatore

Lietamente batte I'onda
sulla sponda...
dallo scoglio un bimbo tende
l’amo e attende...
Fanno i pesci: "Oh lo sappiamo!
Quello é un amo."
Ed al largo van nuotando,
canzonando.
Ma di luce é il cielo, e pare
cielo it mare.
Tutto lieto il bimbo pesca
l'acqua fresca.

É inutile

Quando ho visto destandomi stamane
quel bel tappeto tutto bianco uguale

Tornando a casa

"Mamma, era bel to stare dal la zia!"
racconta il bimbo con viso contento;
"La giornata é passata in un momento,
era quasi peccato venir via.
La zia sta bene, anzi ti manda a dire
che sono stato buono. Sta a sentire:
la gatta nera ha tre nuovi gattini
due neri un grigio, e son tanto carini.
Par che abbia nevicato là nell'orto,
tanti fior son caduti dalle piante
ma dice it giardinier che l'importante
é che leghino i frutti. II merlo é morto!
Poverino, peccato! La zia dice
che dopo chiuso in gabbia era infelice.
(Non ho capito bene la parola
ma dev'essere come stare a scuola).
C'era perfin Ia crema a colazione;
Ora un po' qui vicino a to mi siedo.
É tutto it giorno, sai, che non ti vedo."
