In a previously compiled sketch of the song collection, the movement Il pastorello was foreseen instead of É inutile which was composed around the same time. All texts were written by Lina Schwarz (1876-1947), poet and author of rhymes, songs, books and poems for children, who dedicated her life to social projects for children in need. The same year, Rota composed Lo specchio delle civette, a further song for children, a setting of a text by Aldo Palazzeschi. Thanks to the remarkable number of copies self-printed by Rota, the Liriche infantili initially enjoyed great popularity, despite remaining officially unpublished. The three song titles of the collection correspond to three different images of childhood: the dreamy young fisherman, lost in the tranquillity of the sky and the sea, who is mocked by the fish; the child who is irritated by the carelessness of the sparrows pecking at the breadcrumbs he has spread out for them, and the child returning from visiting an aunt in the country and telling its mother about the day. The common characteristic of these small songs is a clever blend of irony and gentleness. The manuscript bears the dedication: “To Maria with affectionate wishes. Nino / Milan 14 V 1935”.
